Amazon jest bardzo open source
Tim O’Reilly dał w lutym 2004 odpowiedź na pytanie o firmę Amazon, jej sukces i open source, która pokazuje, że owo open source to już na pewno nie jest ruch społeczny, a raczej byt rozdwojony, jak sam Internet, na połówkę komercyjną i nie-. Jednym słowem pora przestać myśleć o tym, że open source zbawi świat i zacząć myśleć, jak można zbawiać świat z open source.
O sukcesie Amazon, zdaniem O’Reilly’ego, decyduje kilka czynników:
- Amazon używa infrastruktury open source, ale ponieważ w ogóle nie dystrybuuje kodu (swoich aplikacji używa jedynie sama firma), nie musi wypuszczać kodu. W nowym świecie Internetu, software jest usługą, a nie artefaktem, zauważa O’Reilly.
- Od infrastruktury ważniejsza jest stworzona przez Amazon architektura uczestnictwa, która zatrudnia miliony użytkowników do budowania wartości firmy: Wyjątkowe w amazon.com jest to, co dodali użytkownicy
- Od jakiegoś już czasu Amazon, choć nie zamierza otwierać kodu, stara się go na pewne sposoby udostępniać – na przykład poprzez Amazon Web Services API, które daje dostęp do bazy danych Amazon, nie odsłaniając jej jednak całkowicie.
- Amazon, zdaniem O’Reilly, otwiera się na innowację z zewnątrz i zapewnia fleksybilność usług swoim klientom, jednak “nie daje użytkownikom konkurencyjnej przewagi”, co jak rozumiem znaczy, że przede wszystkim wykorzystuje ich do własnych celów.
Zdaniem O’Reilly’ego podstawowym zadaniem dla środowiska open source jest zrozumienie, jak z open source korzystają takie firmy jak Amazon, Google, Yahoo czy EBay (zadaniem ważniejszym niż przyjęcie się Linuksa na desktopach). Jeśli dodamy do tego rosnącą rolę open source w administracjach rządowych, okaże się, że rewolucję społeczną zastąpiła (równie być może istotna), rewolucja biurokratyczna i biznesowa.
