Drugi, równie ciekawy wątek dotyczy możliwości kompletnej transformacji nie tylko rynku przeglądarek, ale całego rynku oprogramowania komputerów osobistych, który nastapi, jeśli powstanie nowa platforma aplikacji oparta o otwarte standardy i przeglądarkę, a nie desktop. Platforma taka zniszczyłaby oczywiście monopol Microsoftu, istniejący w oparciu o dwa flagowe produkty: Windows i Office. Pierwszym przykładem takiej sieciowej aplikacji jest gmail, system poczty elektonicznej oferowany przez Google’a.
