Clay Shirky: blogi na potęgę

Clay Shirky opublikował w 1.szej dekadzie lutego kolejny swój esej, tym razem pod tytułem "Power Laws, Weblogs and Inequality" (Prawa potęgowe, blogi i nierówność), [*"prawo potęgowe" jest swego rodzaju eksperymentem translatorskim, będę wdzięczny, jeśli ktoś poda poprawne tłumaczenie lub upewni mnie, że przypadkowo trafiłem w dziesiątkę] w którym używa koncepcji praw potęgowych do wytłumaczenia faktu, że do internetowych systemów społecznych, w miarę ich rozrostu, wkrada się nierówność. Shirky zauważa, że nierówność jest skutkiem połączenia różnorodności i swobody wyboru - przy czym większa różnorodność, wbrew intuicji, nie powoduje że raczej równomiernie wybieramy. Rozkład wyborów się nie spłaszcza, tylko przeciwnie, nierówność staje się bardziej skrajna. Nieuniknionym skutkiem takich swobodnych wyborów okazuje się rozkład zgodny z prawem potęgowym, które stwierdza - w najprostszej formie - że element o pozycji N w rozkładzie będzie miał wartość 1/N.
Shirky jako przykład wybrał blogosferę, w której taki rozkład oznacza, że bardzo mała liczba blogów będzie miała bardzo dużą popularność (mierzoną dowolnie - liczbą odwiedzin, linków z innych stron, itp.) - a bardzo duża liczba stron będzie niemal nieznana.
Wygląda na to, że Clay zajął się blogami z dwóch powodów. Po pierwsze, jest to wdzięczny materiał do badań, gdyż statystyki są stosunkowo łatwo dostępne. Po drugie, Shirky porusza kwestię nierówności, gdyż ich obecność podważa w pewnym sensie wszystkie slogany o wolności wypowiedzi, swobodzie bycia producentem informacji w Sieci: co z tego, że każdy z nas może mieć w Internecie swoją stronę, gazetkę, dziennik, trybunę, skoro nikt jej nie czyta? Shirky dlatego wybrał blogi, gdyż w chwili obecnej blogosfera jest, jak sądzę, tym miejscem w Internecie, z którym wiążą się takie nadzieje. Strony domowe są już bardzo passe.
Tekst Shirky'ego nie jest tekstem naukowym i jego analiza nie jest bardzo zaawansowana. Ale zgrabnie opisuje pojęcie prawa potęgowego i jego konsekwencje; argumentuje też, że nierówności w świecie blogów są a. nieuniknione - są efektem strukturalnych praw działąjących w dużych systemach b. są "sprawiedliwe". Argumentów jest kilka, podstawowy jest taki, że istnieje równość szans - każdy może blogować i że nierówności są efektem "rozproszonego przyzwolenia" wyrażanego przez setki internautów.
Obserwacje Shirky'ego są oryginalne, gdyż zazwyczaj wspomina się o skrajnych nierównościach występujących między mediami komercyjnymi i oddolnymi działaniami medialnymi, o zawłaszczaniu przestrzeni medialnej, czyli uwagi odbiorców, przez niewielką grupę medialnych korporacji. W połączonym systemie mediów komercyjnych i nie rozkład jest też zgodny z prawem potęgowym, ale jego uzasadnieniem są skrajne różnice w dostępnych środkach finansowych, natura globalnego systemu ekonomicznego, itd. - które prowadzą do koncentracji mediów. Shirky pokazuje, że także oddolne media się, w naturalny sposób, koncentrują. Co ciekawsze, najpopularniejsze blogi zdaniem Shirky'ego upodobniają się do głównego nurtu komercyjnych mediów - gdy ich autorzy nie są już w stanie przetworzyć rosnących ilości listów i komentarzy, blogi przestają być interaktywne i stają się kolejnym medium nadawczym.
Ostatnia uwaga. Gdy Shirky mówi o "systemie społecznym blogów" to mam wrażenie, że albo myśli jedynie o blogach amerykańskich/angielskojęzycznych, albo też nie bierze pod uwagę ich różnorodności. Tymczasem jeden czynnik różniący blogi jest jak sądzę kluczowy: język. Na pewno w każdym jednolitym językowo systemie blogowym, takim jak polski blog.pl, też działa prawo potęgowe. A jeśli pomyślimy o wielkim globalnym systemie blogów, którego też - na pewno - dotyczy prawo potęgowe, to czy w ścisłej czołówce znajdzie się międzynarodowa supergrupa, czy też (co chyba bardziej prawdopodobne), będą tam tylko blogi angielskojęzyczne? Wtedy byłby to kolejny przejaw dziwacznego amerykańskiego imperializmu internetowego, którego niektórzy doszukują się w takich zjawiskach jak traktowanie przez USA domen internetowych najwyższego poziomu (.com, .edu, itp.) jako częsciowo własnych, czy też niedopuszczanie alfabetów innych niż łaciński do systemu nazw domen.

A jeśli odejść od anglojęzycznej teorii, która mówi, że blogi są alternatywą dla mediów (i wtedy teoria prawa potęgowego - nie wiem, czy to prawidłowa nazwa - jest zgrabna i logiczna), i spróbować stworzyć nowy konstrukt...

... moim zdaniem polskie blogi nie dlatego są inne od tamtejszych (weźmy choćby te najbardziej widoczne różnice, brak linkowania, brak niusów, brak wiedzy nt. autora...), że są na innym etapie ewolucyjnym, ale dlatego, że polskie blogi nie są i nie chcą być K-logs (knowledge blogs).
Niektóre z naszych blogów są J-logs (journal blogs), i powiedzmy, że mają jednak ograniczoną publikę,
ale dochodzę do wniosku, że polskie blogi są C-blogs, gdzie C ma dwojakie znaczenie - Communication i COmmunity.

Blog staje się MIEJSCEM tętniącym wirtualnym życiem towarzyskim. Istotny staje się proces grupowy, a nie treść bloga. Bloger przychodzi "na bloga", żeby kogoś spotkać i z kimś posiedzieć.

Nie bez znaczenia, jak sądzę, jest fakt, że najbardziej znane są te blogi, które żyją w godzinach pracy....

na marginesie, te wszystkie nazwy blogow sa dla mnie niepokojace. chocby dlatego ze mielismy juz wszystko e- a potem m- w swiecie nowego biznesu. a wiec komercjalizacja przestrzeni blogowej?!?!
